Draft Door and Window Prevention

With winter moving in fast, you might be noticing a drafty door or window. Drafts are caused by small gaps in the construction or seal that allow outside air into your home. Not only do you experience the chilly air, but your energy usage could rise from trying to offset the cold. Callahan Door and Window of Lexington, Ohio wants to offer some tips to managing drafts you discover this winter.

Foam tape is commonly used as a weather and air proofing tactic in places that have been warped. Doors and windows both are prone to warping as they age. Utilizing foam tape on affected, or really any seal, allows for adjustable filling to make a snug fit between the frame and door or window.

Window Film can be used in addition to foam tape if you are looking for further sealing. The film acts essentially like a shrink wrap on your window to keep cool air from reaching your home's air. It looks similar to saran wrap and is adhered with a small strip of tape around the entire window. After both are in place they should be heated with a hairdryer to strengthen the seal and shrink the film to proper fitting. If you have large windows, this may be a two-person job.

Insulated curtains may seem like they offer a minuscule amount of winter protection however they can do more than you think. Through the summer months, they help keep the sun's heat out of your home, however, come wintertime they can help keep heat in. For the best results of heat retention, they should remain closed as often and as long as possible.

Door snakes fit for your door are one of the most effective draft stoppers. Door snakes are weighted fabric tubes that are placed in front of the bottom door seal. They are easy to make for the crafty homeowner, or can be purchased. Rolled towels and blankets can also be utilized for the same effect. The downside is they must be replaced after the door is used.

If you are looking for a more permanent solution, caulking may do that for you but you should also consider replacing your doors and windows. Caulking wears away and can be prone to peeling over time. If you notice just a few spots that need attention a quick recaulk could be in order. If you find yourself using tubes and tubes of caulk, it's time to replace.
