Window Summertime Maintenance

Windows are far more important than we give them credit for. They protect you from outside elements while giving your home the lighting it needs. Summertime doesn't seem to be an important time to check your windows, but it could save you time, money, and comfort when the colder months roll around. At Callahan Door and Window  we know that keeping up with your windows can seem easy, but there are steps that you should be taking in order to make sure you have the best quality and function when it comes to your windows. If you are lost and aren't sure what you are supposed to be checking, we are here to help. Below are some tips on how to check and maintain your windows during the summer months.

You should start out by checking your windows weather-stripping. It provides a tight seal around your windows keeping the outside air out of your home. If this is deteriorating or broken, your windows become far less efficient. This could cause spikes in your heating and cooling bills, and even unwanted damage to your home. If you see that the weather-stripping is brittle, yellowing, broken, or missing, it is time to replace it.

If you have older windows or windows that are wooden or metal instead of vinyl, then you will need to check the glazing of your windows. This is the caulk-like substance that holds the panes of glass in your window frame. If your glazing is broken, or missing, then air can leak through your windows, and moisture damage from the exterior humidity and rain can start to occur. If you are looking to get your glazing replaced you will have to be very careful. This could be a very tricky repair. It is best if you call the professionals in to repair it, and to make sure the job is done right.

Lastly, it is important to clean the insides and outsides of your windows. It isn't just for the clean glass look either. If you let your windows sit in the dust and dirt that accumulates, they could become cloudy or look unclean, even after a good scrub. Cleaning the outside of the glass can also help you identify issues with your glass if there are any.

At Callahan Door and Window we offer a wide array of replacement window styles. If you are finding yourself in need of a window replacement after looking over your windows, we can help! We have plenty of window styles, colors, and options to fit the style of any home.
