Signs You Need A New Front Door

The front door is one of the parts of your home that are the most important. Right up there with windows, doors help to protect you from the weather, help you save money, and provides security for you and your family. Most people have started using their garage and side doors as the main access point to their home, so the front door is often overlooked or forgotten, here are some things you can look out for when checking your door to see if it needs replaced.

If your door sticks and is hard to open and close, this is an indicator that you need to replace your door. This could mean that the hinges are sinking, or that your door has exposed areas around the door. A quick thing you can do to check this is take a lighter around the perimeter of your door and watch what the flame does. If it moves around when you are holding it still then you most likely have air leaking into your home. This could cause your heating and cooling bills to get larger and larger so it should be fixed as soon as possible.

Another indicator that you may need a new door is if you can see moisture in between the panes of glass. This could mean that the seal used has failed and there is now moisture in your door. This could lead to mold and mildew damage, and with front doors this is very important to fix, especially if you have a wood core or framed door. You don't want it to rot from the inside out.

There are many other indicators that your door needs to be replaced but the last one we will bring up is the weathering of your door. Your front entry door takes a lot of damage, and if your home is older then there is a good chance your door needs replaced. If you can see signs of weathering, sun bleaching, warping, or cracking then the doors integrity has been damaged and needs to be replaced immediately. Your door's main purpose it to keep you safe. If it has damage like this, then it isn't very sturdy and can only do so much.
